A Monopoly boardWe've all enjoyed a game of Monopoly at Christmas time but how many of us could picture the family favourite as a silver screen hit?

We're guessing not many. But board games are all the rage in Hollywood these days and a number of game inspired movies are already in the pipeline.

As unlikely as it sounds, a movie version of Battleship is already in development and a release is expected as early as 2011.

Anyone remember Risk? Well, the game, based on the fight for world domination, is just the latest to be lined up for a big screen adaptation and is being co-produced by none other than Will Smith.

Sony Pictures have acquired the film rights from game maker Hasbro, and Smith's Overbrook Entertainment will co-produce, the suggestion being that he may well eventually star in the film.

A Sony spokesman told the Telegraph: "The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game.

"Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie."

It seems Hollywood's latest obsession may have stemmed from the success of films such as Transformers and GI Joe, both based on children's toys.

How Monopoly would work on the big screen is anyone's guess, but Ridley Scott, of Blade Runner fame, is already keen.

The British director is quoted as saying Monopoly: the movie would be a "hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film."

We're looking forward to it already.
