A row of fruit smoothiesThose of you who have gone down the diet milkshake road to weight loss will know that, despite their nutritional value, they're not always enough to stop you reaching for a chocolate muffin.

Thank heavens, then, for the boffins at the School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham University.

A research team at the university have come up with the ultimate diet drink. And they say it will leave you feeling as if you've munched through a substantial dinner.

Not so appealing is the science bit of it. By converting a starch-like substance called gellan gum (commonly used as a thickener in ice cream and the like) into a liquid, they have created a drink that turns to a gel as it reacts with digestive juices in the stomach.

Over the course of six hours, the almost-no-calorie substance slowly breaks down.

And now the scientists believe that by adding nutrients to the drink, they may have come up with the solution to dieting.

Dr Fotis Spyropoulos told the Telegraph: "We think it is a great idea because it is so simple.

"The solution we designed takes advantage of the body's natural process of digestion to convert itself into a gel that fills you up and then breaks down.

"We are now working on how to get it to release energy slowly so that it not only makes the stomach feel full but also provides energy the body needs."

If the mere sound of it has you reaching a full roast dinner, fear not.

The researchers' ultimate aim is to create a breakfast drink or porridge that will leave you feeling full but still able to eat three meals a day.

Provided those three meals don't include burgers, crisps and chocolate, the pounds will no doubt quickly disappear.
