Jane Russell in a still from the 1952 film Son of PalefaceIf you thought you'd found the perfect, seamless, barely-there bra, then you may be disappointed to find you need to start searching all over again.

Yes, the Jane Russell look is back and along with it, the return of the 1950s-style pointy bra.

Originally designed by aircraft designer-turned movie mogul Howard Hughes, the conical bra was developed to make the most of actresses' assets.

And now modern-day fashion designers are leading the renaissance, with the likes of Louise Goldin and Jean Paul Gaultier all revealing a pointier bust in their latest catwalk collections.

John Lewis have already reported a surge in sales of the bras and, with the emphasis on curves, it seems women really are turning away from the boyish figures of the catwalk models.

A spokesperson for the store told the Daily Mail: "Throughout the last century the trend for feminine pointy shaped bras experienced a renaissance following times of a toughened economy, marking a return of unabashed femininity as women seek to have more fun with fashion as a form of escapism."

Sales of the store's best-selling conical bra, the Fantasie Belle, were up by 10 per cent last on the previous week.

Head buyer of lingerie, Helen Spencer said: "We are selling more conical bras this year than last as our customers take influence from designers such as Louise Goldin, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana who have rediscovered the bra as outerwear in their Spring/Summer '10 collections."

So come on girls... make the most of your assets. A spot of Hollywood glamour might just cheer everyone up.
