Those were the days... popping down to the local sweet shop for a quarter of Cola Cubes or a Sherbet Fountain. But as it turns out, it was the aniseed ball that made the biggest impression and it has topped the list as our favourite childhood treat.
And some of our old favourites are due to make a return. Supermarket chain Waitrose are set to begin selling sherbet pips and chocolate mice, along with the now white aniseed balls (no artificial colours or flavourings included).
It is the huge success of the survey to find Britain's favourite childhood confectionery that has brought about the revival of the aniseed ball. Shrimps, lemon bonbons and foam bananas were also found to be firm favourites.
Waitrose confectionery buyer Matthew Jones, told the Daily Mail: "The colour of aniseed balls will certainly raise a few eyebrows with candy connoisseurs.
"However, it is great we are able to bring back these much revered sweets with no artificial colours and flavourings.
We received a fantastic response to our campaign so I think our new retro sweets will be as popular with children today as those who remember tucking into them in decades past."
We'll be heading there shortly for a huge dose of sweet reminiscence.
