When you're searching for your perfect man, many of you will be picturing the muscular toned physique of a testosterone-packed guy.But if it's surprise gifts, diamonds and lavish anniversary dinners you're after, you better think again.
A new study has revealed that high levels of testosterone lead to a distinct lack of generosity.
Researchers at Claremont Graduate University tested the generosity of 25 male students. Each volunteer was given a gel that double their levels of testosterone as well as a placebo cream either a few days before or after the boost.
The students then played a computer game in which they were asked to split $10 with another volunteer.
Each participant played the game both on and off the gel and the rush of testosterone brought on a rather selfish change.
Overall, there was a 27 per cent reduction in generosity, with the average money split offer just $1.57. Given an even more potent variant of the sex hormone, the offer dropped to a paltry $0.55.
Lead researcher Karen Redwine, from Whittier College in California, told New Scientist: "Our broad conclusion is that testosterone causes men essentially to be stingy.
"People are selfish, but they're selfless as well, and it's not understood why the behaviour shifts."
So it might pay to avoid the muscle men girls... the weedier guys just might be all heart.
