Is Ralph Lauren really Photoshopping models to such an extreme that heads come out bigger than hips? It turns out the answer is yes - Ralph Lauren is indeed responsible for the enhanced image of model Filippa Hamilton-Palmstierna, above, left.
Longtime Ralph Lauren model Filippa Hamilton-Palmstierna is shown with her entire body whittled down to an almost emaciated state in the ad. Compare that to her normal image, right, and the difference is even more shocking.
The fashion house has released a statement to Access Hollywood saying the following:
"For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality and integrity. After further investigation, we have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman's body.
"We have addressed the problem and going forward will take every precaution to ensure that the caliber of our artwork represents our brand appropriately," the statement concluded.
The 23-year-old French model's skeletal picture was first spotlighted on a website called Photoshop Disasters, which gathers together 'truly awful' examples of commercial photo retouching.
A blogger at Boing Boing then put the picture online with a caption that read: "Dude, her head's bigger than her pelvis."
After dozens of comments flooded in criticizing the ad and Ralph Lauren, The Huffington Post reports that the legal team at Ralph Lauren accused Boing Boing of copyright infringement for reprinting the ad.
Boing Boing editors fired back saying Ralph Lauren's accusations were bogus and that their actions were legal and fell under the umbrella of "classic fair use: a reproduction 'for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting.'"
French Elle recently did the unthinkable and decided to forgo applying makeup or using Photoshop on it's cover models. Actresses Monica Bellucci, Eva Herzigova and Sophie Marceau are intentionally featured without any make-up or retouching, unlike these other stars...
