Happy woman with shopping bagsFrom a stunning pair of killer heels to the chocolate muffin beckoning from the shop window, the world surrounds us girls with endless temptations.

And it seems when it comes to shopping, we're unable to exercise even a modicum of self-control.

According to the latest study, not only are more than 15 million British women are addicted to shopping and six out of ten felt compelled to spend money at least once a day.

Despite the current economic downturn, a third of the female population were splashing out even though they couldn't afford it.

Joanna Leah, General Manager at the Ipswich Building Society which conducted the study, told the Daily Mail: "I suspect many women reading about this will be able to relate to the findings.

"For many women, spending money is a bit of an adrenaline rush – it makes them feel good in the short term.

"But it's worrying that four in ten admit that they don't budget and often spend beyond their means."

We found it slightly more worrying that the results showed that wandering around the shops constituted many women's happiest moment.

But if you're struggling to put away your no doubt fabulous purse, the poll did include some helpful tips.

For instance, two per cent of shopaholics have tried putting their credit cards in the freezer, rendering them useless, while an astonishing 28 per cent simply forbid themselves from leaving the house, should they feel an attack of the shopping wobbles coming on.

Worth a try, we think you'll agree.
