OK, so it's probably not the most shocking news you've heard this week. But a new report by Which? has revealed the full extent of the fat content from your local high street pizza chain. And it does make for some rather unsavoury reading, with the majority positively drenched in salt, fat and saturated fat.
The consumer watchdog set their sights on your average Margherita pizza as the basis for their investigation and found that some of our popular Friday evening threats contained more than three-quarters of a woman's daily saturated fat allowance.
The Prezzo version contained 77 per cent of our recommended amount, with Pizza Hut not far behind.
And every one of the pizzas tested were found to contain at last 3g of salt – that's half the recommended daily amount for both men and women.
But as it turns out, we're not all craving the most fat we can get our hands on. The Pizza Express Margherita finished top of the 'healthy' list with less than half the recommended saturated fat.
Which? editor Martyn Hocking told Marie Claire: "You'd expect pizza to be high in fat – any meal with that much cheese would be. But the fact that Pizza Express was the reviewers' favourite and its pizzas were the lowest in fat shows that pizzas don't have to overload on grease to taste great."
That may be true, but we dread to think what would happen if they'd gone for a Meat Feast.
