For the female of the species friends are invaluable... for emotional support as well as a good old gossip.

And now scientists say that a strong emotional bond between women and their female friends is not only good for their own health but also that of their children.

The study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, found that baboon babies whose mothers had strong relationships with other females outlived those with less social mothers.

Dr Joan Silk of the University of California explained: "Females who formed stronger bonds with their mothers and adult daughters experienced higher offspring survival rates.

"Being able to connect with women on various emotional levels can assist in lowering blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol.

"And since stress wreaks havoc on blood glucose levels, healing, bone density and the aging process, friends are able to counteract its detrimental effects as indicated in a Harvard Medical School Nurse's Health Study.

Previous research had shown that friends help to improve general health in humans, in particular that of women.

Dr Silk went on: "The more friends a woman has, the less likely she is to develop health problems as she becomes older. Therefore, more friends equal more joy."

What do you think? Are your friends keeping you healthy and happy?
