Shoppers are expected to be queueing up tomorrow when a 'miracle' skin cream goes back on sale.

Demand for the Boots product is expected to be even higher than when it first went on sale in 2007 - because scientific tests have since proved that it does actually reduce wrinkles.

Dermatologists at the University of Manchester carried out trials on 60 volunteers with sun-damaged skin - and discovered that the cream could help to reduce the most common signs of ageing.

They found that 70 per cent of people using the cream for a year had significantly fewer wrinkles than those who were given a placebo.

The study was published online today - just a day before the product goes back into Boots stores across the country.

No 7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum will cost £19.75 for a 30ml tube. It was originally launched in 2006 as No 7's Refine and Rewind cream, and cost £16.75.

Chris Griffiths, the professor of dermatology at Manchester who led the study, said effects varied from person to person - but were visible on before and after photographs after six months.

He also stressed that the research was funded by Boots, but independently controlled. The findings would have been published even if the results were not favourable.

"Boots was actually very brave to subject its product to this kind of testing," professor Griffiths said. "It is rare for such benefits to be reported for an over-the-counter anti-ageing product and this study paves the way for larger studies with more statistical power."
